A sustainable alternative

Sustainability and nature

Norway’s steep mountains and fjords create natural hazards when roads are built along the mountainsides. Increased water levels contribute to risk of landslides and rockfalls. Climate change and the extreme weather conditions further increase the risk.

Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel does not replace existing rockfall protection methods — but instead serves as a safe and sustainable alternative.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Bypass Skredsikring AS is operating in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Our goal is to ensure safe travels in roads with high risk of rockfalls while preserving nature, the environment, society, and the economy for future generations. Our approach is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Industry, innovation, infrastructure

Bypass is built using aluminium, a sustainable material with a 100-year lifespan and minimal maintenance requirements. Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel protects critical infrastructure when people and communities are affected by rockfalls.

Sustainable cities and local communities

We aim to contribute to resilient local communities by ensuring open roads and safe travel. Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel is a long-term and reliable solution for securing roads and other infrastructure. Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel can also help stabilize public transport by reducing the risk of rockfalls affecting railway traffic.

Responsible consumption and production

Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel is made from recyclable aluminium and designed with reuse and material recovery in mind.

Securing critical infrastructure

Since the prefabricated modules are mounted directly onto the existing roadway, environmental impact is kept to a minimum. The structure can also be easily dismantled and reused elsewhere.

However, the social sustainability aspect is the most important factor during the installation phase. The efficient installation process allows one lane of the road to remain open for most of the time, ensuring that critical infrastructure remains intact.

Aluminium: A Sustainable Material

Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel is a robust and secure structure made from steel and aluminium, installed directly onto existing roads. It has a lifespan of 100 years.

Aluminium is a sustainable material — it’s strong, lightweight, and requires minimal maintenance. It is also easy to recycle and reuse. In fact, approximately 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.

Environmental accounting

Significant Reduction in CO₂ Emissions

In collaboration with Asplan Viak, an environmental assessment was conducted for three different rockfall protection solutions: a 1,000-meter-long tunnel, conventional concrete rockfall protection solution, and Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel. The results are striking:

90.8% lower CO₂ emissions compared to the tunnel.

47.7% lower CO₂ emissions than conventional concrete solution.

This clearly demonstrates that Bypass Sikkerhetstunnel is not only technically superior but also significantly more environmentally friendly.
